"Well made and easy to use; perfect for shopping duties"

Looking at their all-new Travoy trailer system, it would seem that Burley are back with a vengeance. It’s an absolute joy to use, has some fantastic features and an impressive load capacity of 27.2kg (60lb). On the bike it’s stable and, surprisingly, doesn’t affect the handling much at all, even when fully loaded.

Off the bike it’s well balanced, and the handle you twist to fold down the bike mount section also serves as a great handle with which to pull the trailer along. The standard tote bag it comes with is roomy and quite stable, and allows you to remove the wheels and fold the whole trailer up neatly inside it.

There are a couple of niggles, though. For starters there’s no safety leash, so should it become detached from the bike it could cause havoc for any oncoming traffic. Also, the hitch mounting only fits on the seatpost (all sizes up to 31.6mm, although longer bolts would extend this).

You’ll need roughly 48cm from your seatpost to the back of your rack, depending on the rack’s height. This could present a problem for bikes that have long rear ends, and also deprives you of the option of being able to have the Travoy and a child seat attached at the same time.

Those complaints aside, this is a great trailer with very little overhang behind you, a mounting system that makes it virtually impossible to tip over, and it works well both on and off the bike.

  • So basically, £279.99 for a shopping trolley bolted to your seat post.

  • or free depending on where you shop:

  • Readers of a certain age may remember the British manufactured "Bike Hod" which seems more or less the same as this trailer apart from a simpler, flexible hose hitch. They may of course still be manufactured but I don't think so. The Bike Hod was designed as an "urban" trailer although I did take one on a cycle camping tour in the Outer Isles in the early 80s. Having two wheels does make any trailer more of a drag than a single wheel one such as the "BOB" trailer but in town this doesn't matter.

  • Is there a XC version, full sus?

  • I was hoping for one in a fetching tartan or checkered design.

  • I've had a Travoy for use around town for a while now. Hitherto I have used panniers and a rack bag , but the Travoy Has been a revelation. It's very stable and has great handling, even when loaded up. I like it's flexibility, as there are various ways it can fold up. In a supermarket I hang it on the trolley, where shopping bags go. In other shops, or the library it can go with you as a trolley with the handle folded down. The choice of bags is good, ranging from the tote bag that comes with it, to office/laptop bags, and now a large, full-length duffle. I also like the fact that you can stap sacks (eg compost) and other bulky items without the bags. The hitch is a doodle, and you can have hitches on different bikes, with no problems. Burley now also have a hitch that can go on a rack, though I have no need of it even though one bike I have has a standard rack on it. Downsides? It isn't really practical for a folder like the Birdy, where folding involves dropping the seat post right down, though it does handle well on it otherwise. And I suppose the biggest downside is the price, if you start adding extra bags.

  • I too have had one for more than a year now. It is holding up well and working just as I hoped it would. Love the bag options, the ease of towing and the convenience of being able to take it inside and pack it up so quickly. I appreciate the rack mount hitch too as I have it set up on a few bikes. I can see why it wins design awards. Love the other Burley Trailer too - I've owned a D'Lite for 10+ years and it too is super durable.
