"Potentially versatile and good value, but too fragile for hardcore all-mountain use"

Cotic’s small range shows good attention to detail and offers plenty to like. For 2009, they've addressed criticisms of a flexible back end on previous versions of the Hemlock to release this, its improved incarnation. Our test bike showed promise – until the frame collapsed due to an assembly failure. Cotic say they've fixed the problem, but we still have concerns.

Ride & handling: Tight and controlled, but we don't think flexy rear end is strong enough

The Hemlock responds as well to being pointed down precisely picked lines as it does to being floated over the top at speed.

Uphill performance was tight and controlled with the ProPedal platform damping dialled in, but we preferred to climb technical sections with the lever flicked off, making the most of the masses of traction.

Unfortunately the swingarm snapped across the lower pivot bearing housings while descending a flight of steps, causing the frame to collapse.

It was then discovered that a crucial washer had been omitted on medium frames during factory assembly. Cotic addressed the problem immediately and the chainstays on all faulty bikes have been recalled and replaced.

They supplied us with a second test sample and although we haven’t replicated the fault since, we remain sceptical about the minimal amount of material at this critical part of the frame.

Under braking the seatstay flexes considerably at the disc mount, and even resulted in the seatstay becoming permanently bowed on our test model.

Frame: Good attention to detail plus adjustable travel at a reasonable weight

As habitual mud pluggers, we appreciated the Hemlock’s weather-friendly details. The swingarm is angled to shed filth, and three-quarter length gear outers resist water ingress. Clearance swallows most combinations of big tyres and sticky mud, and pivot bearings are readily available sealed cartridge units.

The low-slung top tube keeps the bike out of the way for steep descents and technical sections, bolstered by a straight seat tube allowing full saddle drop.

New features for 2009 include the oversized 1.5in head tube, which minimises front end height when run with an integrated headset. Frame finish is black anodised or gloss white powdercoat.

The new Fox RP23 High Volume shock boosts the short-travel version to 120mm (4.72in), while the long-travel stays at 150mm (5.90in).

Travel is adjusted by interchanging the rocker plates, though you’d need suitable forks for each version as it’s designed to run forks spanning 130-160mm travel.

The back end now has a beefy torsion box to improve stiffness while keeping frame weight down to a reasonable 6.5lb.

The Hemlock is only available as a frameset. Our short-travel test bike was fitted with Magura Thor forks, which suffered from top-out rattle.

A vanilla build kit of Shimano SLX drivetrain, Bontrager finishing kit, Magura Louise brakes and Maxxis Highroller wheels was flawless as expected.

    My friend had 2 of these - both cracked on welds around the seatstay after only a few weeks use. Real shame because they rode brilliantly, so I was told.

    Well, learning for their mistakes I'm sure next years bikes will be absolute belters.

    I don't think small designers can compete with the huge expense of R&D (trial& error) from the Big companies when it comes to suspension. There's just too much going on and things like this happen.

    I'm a steel hardtail guy, SS usually, and Cotic/On-One etc can definitely compete in the 'simple hardtail' market.

    At Bike Demo Day, I tried a variety of full-susers from Santa Cruz, Pace, Cotic and unfortunately I found the Cotic uninspiring to say the least. "It's just a bike" my mate said. The others all had their own character and were great fun.

    Having said all that. Pace must fall into the "small designer" bracket - and the 405 was fantastic!

    So, let me get this right: it fell to pieces while on test, and it still gets 2 stars? Just as a matter of interest, how bad would it have to be in order to get 1....or none?

    rhext, as it explains in the review, the bike broke due to a missing washer. Cotic addressed the problem immediately and the chainstays on all faulty bikes were recalled.

    The replacement test bike did not have the same problem. The other faults we identified were not sufficient to only award it one star.

    i agree with rhext not only did the thing fall appart but what about this bit of the review "Under braking the seatstay flexes considerably at the disc mount, and even resulted in the seatstay becoming permanently bowed on our test model." That'll be nice when your seatstay collapses under heavy breaking.

    I'm sorry but this product isn't fit for sale as it is, MBUK should have given it zero stars and Cotic if they had any sense would remove it from market till they fix it, unless they fancy a nice lawsuit sometime soon.

    I've tested one of these (not a 2009 one) and really liked it. It was set up just how I wanted it short back end with long fork and rode really well. If I hadn't got a good deal on a Blur 4X I would have had one. Glad I didn't now as I do tend to break things!

    i've been riding my Hemlock hard for 2 months, it hasn't missed a beat. it's a brilliant bike.

    Not everyone will like the handling, it's similar to my Dh bike, shortish front end and a slack head angle. but it still climbs well (unlike my Dh bike) (and better than my 06 enduro)

    Don't think of this as a Free-ridey / huck frame (kona coiler), it's more a light enduro bike, with Dh-esque handling (lapierre). it's heaps of fun.

    and there's my one main complaint, The way this frame rides will encourage / allow me to thrash it silly, but at only 6.5lbs, i'm not sure it's strong enough to cope with the abuse i want to dish out (the handling is definitely Dh raceable - i love it).

    i have to ask the reviewer, how do you notice the seatstay flexing during braking? (you can't see them from the 'cockpit', and if you're moving, how would anyone else see it?) with disc brakes nothing will flex until the bike is moving - it's not like V-brakes which push the frame apart.

    i've checked, and there's no sign of bending on my frame, i weigh 100Kg with all my kit.

    I appreciate the general feeling of support guys. Thanks. To be fair to Future, I had a meeting with them to work through the issues as they saw them, and whilst we've had to agree to disagree on one point they did give me the opportunity to say my piece before going to print.

    I think a lot of people on this thread feel that the Cotic Hemlock is the only bike (or component)

    to ever fail. I own a Hemlock and it has never failed. What did fail was my pair of Fox 36 forks

    in the first 2 months. The seals blew out whilst cruising along on a fire road. Am I going to stop buying Fox forks? No, because I like the way they work.

    All products can suffer from failures. Like the recent failure of a Kona Stab that put a

    journalist in hospital or the recall of Trek Session 88 frames due to being too thin!

    Which I may add is still a 5 star bike on this website. May be that should be 2 stars now?

    Maybe it just a case reputation. The big companies can survive product failures because they

    are established.

    Regarding my Hemlock. I took it to Finale Ligure for two days of "extreme all mountain" riding with big drops, jumps and rock gardens and it did not break. (I accept the bike is not designed for Freeride duties) Most riders in the group where on 8 inch bikes. The Hemlock was taken down proper DH tracks and survived some big rocky crashes (my fault btw) without any dents.

    Unique products require faith, but can be more rewarding. Just like the spitfire!
