"This is still a super-smooth bike, but it’s not as outstanding or spirited as it was"

By Guy Kesteven, What Mountain Bike

It’s a sign of how fast the trail bike benchmarks are changing that one of the top bikes of recent years is now starting to look off the pace for all-round riding.

The Commencal is still a super-smooth descender, with noticeable stiffness boosts from the new linkages and screw-through fork. The handling isn’t as lively as some of the competition though, and high weight saps climbing speed.

Ride & handling: Good climber, but lacking playbike insolence

We said last year that the Meta was in danger of losing its pole position unless Commencal did something significant to sharpen and lighten it up. Unfortunately the changes they've made haven’t been enough.

While the '09 model is stiffer around the front end and linkages than previous Metas, there’s still an ‘articulated’ feel between the two halves. There’s a serious amount of wheel flop at the rear tips too, which makes it smear rather than stick lines.

Despite a half-degree slackening of the head angle, the 90mm stem and tall bottom bracket make for a more cross-country feeling bike.

The upsides are that it holds a line better on climbs and you can pedal through more stuff without stubbing your toes. The screw-through Fox fork and stiffer driven rear damper also feel better in control terms.

Although it’s only a stem change away, it’s got less of the ‘leap off everything, slide the rear in the gravel’ insolence it used to have. At over 30lb with a soft pedalling feel and short top tube, we knew every descent would be matched with a slog back up the far side.

New linkages help reduce rear wheel wag of previous models: new linkages help reduce rear wheel wag of previous models

Frame: Stiffer links, new tubes and revised angles

You wouldn’t guess it from a quick glance, as the layout is identical, but the 2009 frame uses a new tubeset and revised geometry.

‘H’ gussets under the big down tube and above the top tube reinforce the front end, with a flared top tube end butting up against the skinny seatpost.

An open CNC machined section in the bike’s belly joins the bottom bracket, down tube seat tube, main pivot and front mech stub. The Contact System suspension gets significantly stiffened linkage pieces, too.

Equipment: Decent kit from Shimano and Fox, but we'd recommend a stem swap

Last year’s special edition XT Meta was a massive success, but this year’s UK edition is more of a Shimano SLX/XT mix. The SLX chainset looks great though, with only softer feel from the SLX shifters being noticeable in performance terms.

Fox rear shock and 15mm screw-through axle Float fork are a bonus, and the fast-rolling Maxxis Larsen rear tyre offsets high overall weight. The 90mm stem isn’t as swift handling as the 70mm on last year’s bikes though.

Fox’s 15mm float is our favourite 140mm trail fork too: fox’s 15mm float is our favourite 140mm trail fork too

I'd find the reviews more useful if they had the date on them (for when you're browsing through old reviews) and if they listed the best in class alternatives, maybe with a link to their reviews.

I think it gets more confusing because if you search for the review of the Meta 5.5.2 (09) you see they give it 4 stars and the text reads like a 41/2 or 5 star review - and as far as I am aware they are exactly the same frame.

I realise one has come from WMB but it doesn't half get confusing when they are hosted by the same site...

That's an unbelievably ugly bike. Seriously, it's not the 80s anymore.

If you're going to say 'it's not the best all round bike' can you tell us what is and maybe add some links to make it easier to review everything in this class.

I bought one a month ago, its the small 16"size which comes with the 70mm stem as standard,so far very happy with it i`ve found it a good all round bike, great for for jumps, single track ,descending.Flick the propedal on climbs no problem ,im no weight weenie.Only thing im not convinced on is the mix of tyres, may change them or just the rear, got it for a good price aswell.

I bought one in December, haven't done too much on it other than Cannock. Got to say I am well impressed. The bikes is awesome, just floats over the rough stuff giving you confidence to leave the brakes off for longer and really throw it onto corners.

Coed y Brenin beckons next weekend for 3 days so I'll know for definite how good it is then but I have no doubts that I am gonna be impressed.

i recentley bought a 55 uk also and on the whole have been happy with my purhase. value wise i reckon they are pretty much second to none i paid £1800 for mine in feb but i see royles are doin them now for £i599 which for me takes some beating. think the review is a bit harsh but cant argue with the fact that its a bit of a porker but if you chuck £500 or £600 at it (new wheels, bar and stem) and its a 28lb trail bike thats mint fun for not much more than a blur lt carbron or ibis mojo etc. bottom line im pleased with the bike if i had the money i would have loved a 09 orange 5 but for the money you cant go wrong, paint and welding aint great but if you like paint and welding by a foes!

I'm so confused, I really want one after reading the glowing review for the 5.5.2, but after reading this I'm disheartened! They are two completely different reviews. More owners comments please to sway me in either direction...

so many bikes to choose, but i agree, the different reviews seem to be a little confusing.

30lbs is heavy, and a bit of a slog up hills?

wow, im only 5'5", not exactly the fittest person in the world and my hard tail ways close to 32lbs. Also with the added weight of my hydration pack which is another 5lbs, and yet im still cabable of cycling around brechfa and even carrying it up to the top of snowdon. Seriously if anyone thinks a 30lbs bike is to heavy, then they need to get out more.

BTW, it would also be helpfull when telling us the weight of a bike, as to what size it is, after all there can be a difference when comparing a size small with a size large. Also frame weight would be nice, becouse most mountain bikers end up changing parts and upgrading as they go along, so a base weight is sometimes more important than overall weight.

I have one and its a great bike. It's not the most responsive climber but the downs are insanely fun, especially after switching to a 70mm stem which if you want can only cost £20! The spec is also very good and if you can get one discounted its a great value.

I have the model with the Black Fox forks, this bike is bloody fantastic... I can't fault it, has turned me into a trail hooligan.

This part of the review is stupid to say the least:

Quote" high weight saps climbing speed. Ride & handling: Good climber " unquote:

get one you will not be disappointed.....
