"A good trail glove with enough padding for a long day"

Fri 7 May 2010, 11:00 am BSTBy

The Gel Long was immediately obvious as a decent all-day riding glove. With plenty of thick gel padding around the heel of the hand and base of the fingers to isolate you from trail buzz, we found they were supremely comfortable on the bike.

The downside of all this padding is that they make you feel a little removed from the bars – reducing feel – with the thick gel pads combining so no part of your palm has direct contact.

Other gloves solve this by only having thick protection at the heel of the hand, but then they don’t offer the all-day-ride protection of the Gel Longs.

The fit was good with very elastic body material linked with Lycra between the fingers, backed up with a good smattering of silicone dots for brake and shifter grip. If you need ultimate palm protection the Gel Longs are hard to beat.

  • I love these gloves for MTB'ing. But, they have one major flaw, which I suspect is built-in obsolescence.

They will last 3-4mths of use before the fore-finger and/or thumb break through.

Typically, I buy 2 pairs, and then rotate their use. That way, they last me until the cold sets in, and I can switch to Winter gloves.

5/5 if only they lasted more than 3mths normal use. So, 3/5 it is.
