Berghaus bike gear has made a big impact in its short time on the market, bringing the brand's legendary mountain-proof quality into the wheeled world. Unlike the cheaper shells here the Chrome is fully waterproof with taped seams and a tall fleecy collar to fight off heavy weather.

The drop hem is double drawcorded for sealing purposes too and even features an LED clip tab. Cunning hidden scoop vents along the back panel keep it cooler than you'd expect, though only if you're riding bareback. Otherwise you need to rely on the big mesh backed map pockets on the chest and sliding the broad Velcro sleeves right up to refrigerate your wrists and freeze your blood if you do start cooking.

Other nice details include an internal chest pocket for valuables which even has a detachable key clip, and a soft chin guard on the main zip. The comfortably mobile multi panel fit and consistently high quality adds a real quality feel too.

All the features and thicker fabric make it a much heavier jacket though and pack size is nearer 'bag of flour' than the Coke can scale of the others. If that's an issue then the stripped down Nickel (or Platinum if you're a lady) from Berghaus is well worth a look as losing pockets also saves you a tenner bringing the price down to £65. It's still 'pack into a bag' not a 'back pocket' size though.
