Full-on winter protection, but if it isn't cold you'll roast

Unsurprisingly, the new jacket from the Scots at Endura is a seriously warm heavyweight. As well as a fleecey lining, the front has deep double back flaps and a draught flap behind the zip.

An outer treatment stops the fabric 'wetting out' and drowning rather than breathing by 'beading' rain drops and rolling them straight off. Add a stiff 'tall as your ears' double thickness collar and this is an impressive weather beating jacket that stayed totally cosy whatever we dragged it out in. The long underarm zips are held almost shut by a mesh liner though, which reduces their effectiveness and leaves this a cold-weather-only option. Our normal medium sample was bigger than most large jackets, so pick a size down to avoid unpleasant draughts and fabric flap. Zipped chest and handwarmer pockets are cumbersome when loaded too, so you're relying on a backpack for cargo carrying. It's also the heaviest jacket here by a country mile. Endura also does the Air Defence (£70) and Windtex (£65) jackets which are less toasty, lighter weight alternatives at a great price (see www.endura.co.uk for more details) and we're also testing an impressive new prototype.
