Bionicon’s clothing has a distinctive Euro flavour, but the more we use it, the more we really like this high-tech coat.

Built with a Schöller 3XDry Softshell, it’s got a unique, almost iridescent surface sheen and the unbrushed interior feels cold and clammy when you first put it on.

Not only does it shrug off heavy rain showers, but trail muck doesn’t seem to stick either. It’s outstandingly breathable, keeping you dry and cosy.

Cord adjusters at hem and sleeve ends stop draughts and it’s super stretchy, so it’ll fit over armour without restricting movement.

The twin ended zip from cuff to armpit gives massive core cooling options. Proper easy running zips all round are way better than sticky ‘waterproof’ ones, and you get twin hand and chest pockets too.

The downsides are the hefty weight and price, but if you’ve got the money then this is a proper cutting-edge coat.

Guy started filling his brain with cycle stats and steaming up bike shop windows back in 1980. He worked the other side of those windows from '89 while getting a degree in “describing broken things covered in mud" (archaeology). Dug historical holes in the ground through the early '90s, then became a pro bike tester in '97. Guy has ridden thousands of bikes and even more components the world over since then and can remember them all in vivid, haunting detail. Can't remember where the car keys are, though.
