"Fantastically sweat free all-rounder, but price is slightly high"

Tue 12 Feb 2008, 10:00 am GMTBy

Scottish epic specialists Endura add some useful features to excellent eVENT performance. The eVENT fabric offers outstandingly high sweat transmission, although the rear shoulder yokes won't work with a bag.

Like the Pace, we've regularly used this jacket as a windproof on dry cold days. There's no shortage of weatherproofing, with corded neck and hem, and Velcro wrists stopping drips.

Hand and pod pockets, plus a more casual cut add utility over the Pace, and features a throat zip guard and reflective detailing on the mobile multi-panel cut. It's £50 more expensive than eVENT coats from Pace and Gill, so you'd have to really value those extra pockets

  • UPDATE: We've been living and riding with Endura's eVent for a year now and are still very impressed with its performance. We haven't needed to re-treat the DWR finish. It's a great do-it-all jacket and although it's bulkier than the waif-like jackets, we feel it's worth carrying that bit of extra weight. The outer fabric is very tough and hard wearing and the breathability is on par with the higher priced Gore-Tex XCR jackets. The typically British fit has loads of room and the overall style fits in well with the harsh rigours of mountain biking. The clever little features also add up, like not speccing a water resistant main zip and ging for a double baffled, oversized, smoother operating YKK zip instead. Other features include rear shoulder vents, hem, neck and cuff closures, drop back with an anatomic cut and a back poacket that fits a standard OS sized map.

  • A great jacket in all respects. Even on dry days I use this jacket on top of a base and mid layer. If you stop for breaks during a ride it keeps wicking so you don't get cold.

The fit and cut are great but not too 'cycle specific' so you could quite happily wear this jacket with jeans if you're just buzzing around locally on your bike.

Only one design fault I can find is that because of the acute angel of the side pockets, you need to hold the top of the zip with one hand and pull the zip with the other. I would have much preferred to be able of operate the zips single handed.

All in all, a tough jacket that looks good, fits well and works a treat.

  • After a year of ownership I've a few niggles with this jacket that stop me giving it personal 5 stars.

Firstly, the wind baffle near the neck can be incredibly annoying at times, it seems to jam on the zip far too easily, both on the way up and the way down. Unless it's really cold or windy I'll just end up doing the zip up below the baffle, and velcroing the rest to save hassle.

Other less annnoying problems are; the velcro on the wrist tabs seems a bit poorly stuck on, and I've ended up gluing it back myself. The tabs on the zips use a sort of pop rivet to stick them together, these have come undone quite a few times. And the hole in the mp3 player pocket is really small, and consequently a pain to get your headphone lead through if you use an L shaped plug.

Other than that the actual performance has been superb, wicking an waterpoofing are both excellent and the cut is good enough to not flap around on the bike while not looking bizzare off it.

  • Best waterproof and breathable jacket I've ever owned. Keeps the rain out and keeps you dry inside (and I heat up very easily).

My only gripe would be that the cuffs coud be better (velcro straps are a bit poor on a jacket of this spec).

Best bit of clothing I own though (even better than my Assos shorts)!!!

  • I've gotta give this jacket 5/5. Over the years I have bought the usual sale items on the cheap just cos I didn't have the money for one of the top line modern waterproofs. Anyhoo, decided to bite the bullet and was allowed spend a little extra (thanks Wendy!!), the result was the venturi jacket and trousers. Wow..........please take note.........if you are ever tempted to spend 50-100 quid on a raceface designer special (i've had 3) or similar, please trust me and save up the extra few quid (thats all it will be on CRC or wiggle) and buy this instead (or the stealth or (more pricey) any Gore bike jacket). I've hade this jacket for two winter seasons now and it hasn't missed a beat - waterproof, breathable, tough.......well you know you've read all the reviews......

Summary: Top drawer and certainly worth every penny - just don't pay £150 when you'll get it for £120 shopping about.

  • still going after a few years use, no signs of wear and still as dry as can be, well worth the outlay

  • The fit on these jackets are very, very poor.

The neck on my medium jacket is 21 inches! that's a big area to stop rain getting into and a big wind drag, that takes 2 hands to open or close, not great on a wet day. Elbows are only slightly articulated and it still tends to bunch at the shoulders.

Overall the fit can' compare with a gore jacket. For £150 it should and could be better.
