Polaris Neutron waterproof jacket £99.99

A useful outer layer

BikeRadar score 3/5

The Neutron jacket from Polaris is fully waterproof, with taped seams and watertight zips, which means storing essentials in the large chest pocket is both safe and secure.

The lightweight 2.5-layer fabric has a healthy crinkle and rustle to it, and the jacket  has a light enough construction that it can be packed down into its impressively small mesh stuff pack and stored in a pack or jersey pocket easily enough.

Polaris haven’t compromised much on extra features to achieve this small size though – you still get added weatherproofing from collar and double-sided hem drawcords as well as an internal zip flap.

The sleeves are long enough that they still provide complete coverage while your arms are bent and yanking on the bars, and the soft Velcro adjustable cuffs with neat laser-cut tabs mean you can ensure the wind and rain are kept well and truly out.

Polaris describe the Neutron as “race fit”, but there’s enough space for a couple of layers underneath. In fact, while the Neutron keeps the elements at bay well and is surprisingly breathable, we'd recommend wearing a base layer because things can get clammy after a while in the saddle.

If you’re planning to use your jacket for commuting, the Neutron’s big reflective logos will be welcome. The rear flap does a good job of keeping your backside dry and the adjustable hem means it’s easy to get the fit right, likewise with the neck.

Despite its light weight, the Neutron is still a good performer in terms of waterproofing, although we’d appreciate some pit zips and at least one more pocket.
