Rapha lightweight softshell jacket
|$295
BikeRadar verdict
"Another fine, albeit spendy, Rapha product that's worth a second look."
Shopping partners
The US$295 Rapha Lightweight Softshell jacket looks minimalist, but keeps your upper body warm when layering for cooler weather riding.
This 11.4oz/323g three-season windproof shell comes with all the standard accoutrements, including a slightly longer tail flap, three rear pockets, and Lycra cuffs to keep out the wind. Rapha's Hytrel membrane fabric keeps the warm body heat in.
Verdict
The sleeves are long enough to crouch in the drops, and the soft shell dries quickly the handful of times our tester got stuck in the rain. The tall collar and assymetric zipper are handy and accessible while riding. The snug, body-hugging shape is subtle and not distracting like other jackets of this type. Another fine, albeit spendy, Rapha product that's worth a second look.

I bought this jacket about 4 months ago and initially loved it.
The fit is superb, it fels a bit odd off the bike but as soon as you get on the bike it comes into its own. The collar is just right, arm length is perfect, its close fitting but has a slight stretch so moves with you.
WIndproofness is spot on and it used to be water resistant.
This is where it goes wrong - I have washed it twice in cold water only by hand and it now has absolutely no resistance to water at all - was wearing it in a short summer shower the other day and within 30 seconds I was soaked to the bone and cold - if you are riding fast and creating some heat its ok but if you aren't then you are going to get cold quickly.
Also all of the sections on reflective piping are losing their reflective coating - underneath is a white fabric so it just looks really worn out and is no longer reflective.
Finally the cuffs are all fraying where they catch on the velcro of my riding gloves.
Oh and I got the green one and it shows every little bit of dirt so don't expect it to look clean for long!!
I have just today returned it to Rapha hoping to get a full refund, a shame really as it is well thought out and designed with the rider in mind but just too many down sides in a short space of time for me to fully recommend it.
I guess if there is no chance of rain then I would recommend it, or if at your destination you can get out of it and get warm quickly then it is fine but If there is chance of prolonged rain or heavy showers then I would not advise taking it with you - I have just bought a Pace eVent jacket that breathes almost as well and is guaranteed to keep me dry and warm at my destination.
