Freestyle Ride 461
BikeRadar verdict
"Tough windproof but relatively expensive for its features"
It's no surprise that Freestyle makes great gear for UK riding because it's based and designed in England. The Ride 461 uses a Gore Windstopper fabric with a velvety mesh wicking layer laminated onto the inside for decent breathability.
It's medium warm rather than super cosy, but that makes it more versatile in less wintry weather and a waterproof surface treatment goes at least some way to try and keep you dry. The slightly rough fabric is plenty tough in crash/bush whacking terms too, and the tall cord adjustable collar and long body length (again with drawcord) add welcome coverage. Long Lycra cuffs can get soggy, but they keep draughts out without stopping you pulling the sleeves up for cooling down and it stays comfy even if it turns nastier once you're out. General fi t is slightly basic though, relying on slight stretch in the fabric rather than smart shaped panels. Trail practicality is boosted by a zipped left-hand chest pocket and another zipped pocket at the rear right, although neither are big enough for an OS map. The Freedom jacket adds long cooling vents for an extra £20.
Manufacturers description
The brand new WINDSTOPPER® SOFT SHELL fabrics from Gore are designed to give more comfort without sacrificing protection. They combine the soft, comfortable fit of a mid-layer with the reliable protection of a shell against cold wind, light rain and snow. The British weather can be very changable, now there is a fabric that is versatile enough for the changes in the day! The outer layer has a water repellant treatment which rain will run off and not soak through. Add to this the water resistant and windproof membrane and you have reliable protection. The fabric has fantastic abrasion resistance and is soft and stretchy which gives it a completely different feel! The high wicking internal layer has a soft X pattern that allows your body's vapour to get to the very breathable membrane much easier. Washing and tumble drying will keep the fabric at maximum performance. The internal layer is soft enough to wear next to the skin should you wish to and gives the garment a high quality feel.Shopping partners
