"Superb all rounder, blending lightweight protection with streetwise looks"

By Guy Kesteven

The evolved version of last year's winning jacket still fights off the worst weather and the opposition. Sombrio's unique fabric doesn't shift sweat as well as the most breathable fabrics here, but there's just enough cooling from the front-of-arm vents to keep it comfy.

The fabric is super stormproof - and a rollaway hood and generous sleeve and body length means no gaps. Its outstanding stretchiness makes it very mobile and impressively tough. Our last example stayed rip-free and kept rolling the heaviest rain off - until we lost it on the MegaAvalanche glacier...

It packs down small and it looks great off the bike too, complete with a magnetically flapped pocket and metal logo on the chest for your iPod or keys.

Manufacturers description

Don’t be conned by the subtle lines and classy styling. Our VAPOR performs in the roughest conditions year in year out. This light-weight, rugged, yet trim-fitting soft shell is ideal for year-round exploits in wet and stormy conditions.

I decided to buy this jacket after having read the above review.

This jacket stood out to me because unlike the rest, it has a hood and looks less like those typically ugly cycling jackets. I also liked the fact that Sombrio had done away with the tacky pattern that was to be found on the arm of the previous years model.

Unfortunately the jacket came as quite a disappointment. While it may perform very well in holding its own in the wind and rain...Because of the under arm vents, the plastic zipper leaves the cut feeling quite rigid and obtrusive..the way the under arms puff out because of this, leaves the jacket looking a little odd when not on the bike..Also the pocket that sits on the chest with its magnetised insert, feels like its weighing the front of the jacket down..and to hold the inner compartment in place..it's as if the whole thing has been bonded to the fabric from the inside..while this may not initial sound like a problem..it starts to become apparent when you see a profile shot of yourself looking 3 months pregnant. If you pay close attention to the picture of the jacket above...even though its lying flat, you can still see the way the jacket crumples out around the mid section (very uncool and annoying)

This is especially apparent because unlike the picture seems to suggest (casual riding loose fit jacket) it actually hugs the body all the way down (except of course for the CRUMPLED out mid section!)

To summarise..the features and functionality of the jacket are pretty good..but COOL looking everyday waterproof that you may want to wear off the bike, it is not.. (In reality the picture looks soooooooo deceiving)

In the end I returned the jacket and bought an ugly but highly practical cycling specific Endura Event Ventura Jacket for the same price..(Much more breathable and comfortable to wear)
