Shimano MT31 SPD Shoe | £44.95
BikeRadar verdict
"High quality shoe with plenty of features that's well priced too"
Although the MT31s are Shimano's entry-level leisure shoes, they're not short of features. There are small reflective dots at the front and rear, a bungee for keeping laces under control and even a glow-in-the-dark tab at the front.
The sole has deep lugs for good grip, with a reinforced, double stitched toe bumper. Synthetic leather gives it durability on the sides while padded nylon mesh, in an appealing blue sheen, keeps it light and breathable. The cut is really good - it's padded enough for comfort but trim enough for a close fit. The cleat isn't as deep as some, so the outer lugs are raised to add extra clearance. Overall construction is really good, especially given its reasonable price tag.

User review of Shimano MT31 SPD Shoe
Good looking shoe with quite a nice feel inside. I don't find them particularly good to walk in as the cleat contacts the ground but I never expected them to be as good as the hiking boots I usually ride in. Also, I find that the heel area isn't as tight as maybe it should be; there is some slack in the shoe that I have to take up as I twist out of the SPD making it a bit harder on the knees than I expected. If you run your SPDs good and tight you might find the shoe has a lot of 'give' before you start to unclip. Thicker socks will probably help, but make sure you buy them nice and snug. These are my first clip in and along with some entry level Shimano SPDs, i'm getting along nicely. Top shoe, see no reason to spend any more than this.

User review of Shimano MT31 SPD Shoe
Purchased a pair a few months ago and have found them comfortable to wear, with a good snug fit. (Being my first ever paid of clip in shoes, being a new starter to MTB riding, I can't judge it against anything else, but so far I it does everything I need)
Being a UK size 9, I did find the euro equivalent size 43 a little tight around the toes, but the 44 I have was much better fit.
In use, I find no problem in clipping in and out of the M505 pedals supplied with my bike. I agree that the cleat is very close to the level of the sole, so walking on flat surfaces is no problem, but give it a bit of stoney ground and I aleady have good number of nicks in the cleat
