"Provide winning all-day comfort on and off the bike"

Thu 2 Sep 2010, 5:00 pm BSTBy

Styled like a general outdoor shoe but with SPD compatibility, the MT42 doesn’t look too extreme. Yet despite the fact that it may be thought of as an entry-level option, there clearly hasn’t been too much compromise in terms of pedalling performance versus off-bike comfort.

The upper conforms well to the foot and doesn’t just rely on the footbed to provide support and security. As a result, your feet don’t slide around, and the addition of a Velcro strap to the lace fastening means you shouldn’t feel too much give when climbing either.

In addition to all that, the sole is light and comfortable enough to wear while walking. You don’t feel the cleat through it, and we’ve found that we can easily wear the shoes for a whole day both on and off the bike.

In fact, we happily did an entire photo shoot in Wales's Brecon Beacons that involved as much clambering as it did riding, with no sore bits or hot spots at all.

A robust toe bumper makes for excellent protection as you kick through rocks, and the mesh-and-leather upper feels reassuringly sturdy without being too hot. The more we wear these shoes, the more we appreciate their quiet, hardworking quality.

  • Good for trail riding with soles giving you enough grip on wet rock and roots, but the uppers have silly solutions and the sole has to be backed by marine sealant to be waterproof. Lack og stiffness is not noticeable.

There is a BIG BUT though: How often do you sweat your feet wet? How often do your feet get wet from stepping into marsh poodles?

Bicycle- and apparel designers: Please, please understand this:

-The majority of your customers do not live in California or Utah, why not optimize equipment for the conditions the majority of your customers live in? Like full leather uppers rather than "breathable" mesh and super tacky soles?

  • Shimano do a meshless shoe, the M183N at less than £100 at Merlin.

  • Shimano also do the MT60 with a GoreTex liner (currently £82 at Merlin) which are excellent, breathe well and completely waterproof. Highly reccommended.

  • Had I ordered some shoes on the net these would not have been even remotely what I would have chosen. BUT - I went to a shop so that the fit was the right one. The shop left me alone to go through their stock and after looking at many pairs these were easily the best choice for the type of riding I do. Audax bike but which I often take off road. Very robustly constructed and comfortable from the begining. A bit heavier than other shoes but you don't notice. They feel as though they are going to last a very long time. Highly recommnded.

  • These are excellent all round shoes although not waterproof, they are not designed to be so. Cleats are well sunk into the sole so do not rub on the ground. They are very well made and although the soles are stiff they remain easy to walk in and there is no sense of feeling the pedal through the sole. They engage with the pedal very easily. Normally I take a size 9 (British Size) so bought size 44 and thet fit perfectly. I have now ordered a larger size to wear with very thick thermal socks for winter. I have put a small squirt of silicon sealer in the holes arround the cleats to at least make the soles fully wareproof but not too much as that would interfere with the engagement of the cleat. Can be bought for about £50 on net. Highly recommended.
