Carnac Ozone
BikeRadar verdict
"A pair of Carnacs for £70 to suit beginners, commuters and winter trainers"
Carnac is an established player in the shoe market and has a wide range of models to choose from. The Ozone is aimed at the sport cyclist and at £70 will appeal to seasoned riders looking for a commuting/winter shoe that performs well, lasts for years but doesn't cost a fortune.
While Carnac has retained their distinctive looks they have lost the former lavish construction that boosted longevity but also added weight.
The Ozone is made very simply with just two Velcro straps, a split upper with a fixed central tongue. This simple approach however belies many good features necessary to make a good shoe: Good fit for instance is achieved by an enveloping cut and a supporting heel cup; this shoe is also quick and easy to take on and off which is important for regular users, including new triathletes; the substantial heel makes for safe walking and dark and simple uppers will hide dirt and preserve good looks. None of these features cost anything apart from experienced design in the early stages.
The fit is small for quoted size so double-check before ordering. Stiffness in use is as you'd expect from a carbon composite sole but, in this case, weighted just right for the purpose. The Ozone uses the same sole deployed in the more costly Riviera and Tignes models retailing at £89.99 and £99.99 respectively.
