Cannondale RE5000
BikeRadar verdict
"A fantastic looking, lightweight and comfortable race shoe"
A classic-looking race shoe with just enough pearl white to avoid the 'cor, they look pimpy!' jibes. The blend of silver and matt black reinforcements breaks up bulk and gives a light and airy look to the shoe. The RE5000 is aimed at high-end road and race use with features such as a super-stiff sole and easily adjusted foot tension to allow tweaks on-the-fly. Light weight and wrap-round heel fit are also high on the agenda.
In use the RE5000 was tight for its size so be prepared to go up one size if you are already at the snug end of your usual size. The soft imitation leather uppers are comfortable and the mesh inner will offer good breathability in the summer.
There's a small heel to bring walking this side of suicide but no front tab so be careful when sprinting for your latte. The Diadora-made ratchet works really well, having a logical release mechanism and easy entry when first putting the shoes on.
The sole is a combination of plastic resin and carbon reinforcement with a cleat insert to allow replacement for wear or compatibility with different pedal systems.
These shoes are an obvious purchase for Cannondale owners but the branding is really subtle for those worried about flying someone else's flag.
