"Good looking, but we had rubbing heel and cleat hotspot problems"

By Guy Kesteven

If you like your reflective piping, then Cannondale's Roam is covered in it without effecting generally stylish 'normal' looks - and it's also available in a women's version. While the sides are mesh, which is a bit chilly, the toe is mostly solid which makes for decent splash and windchill protection.

Broad sole and plastic heel flanks ward off rocks, too. The lace closure also gets a press stud lace keeper on the outside to keep them out of your chain. There's plenty of room and width in the toe box too, as well as reasonably tall coverage at the ankle for stumbling stability. Chunky all-round tread with moulded toe studs gives decent grip, but stiffness in the forefoot and a tall heel caused a lot of movement and rubbing when they were new. Despite the toe stiffness, the cleat position is obvious too, with a 'stone in your shoe' lump right in the ball of your foot which isn't exactly comfortable. They're reasonably well priced if you're not intending to use cleats, though.
