Altura Attack 3/4 waterproof shorts £65

Our pick of the bunch

BikeRadar score 4.5/5

Altura’s range of UK-designed clothing has some good stuff, and the waterproof Attack three-quarters are a highlight. They’re made from Altura’s three-layer React waterproof/ breathable fabric. On paper, it boasts impressive breathability – we’ve never found waterproof shorts demand as much airflow as jackets, but you’re not paying a premium for it here, so you might as well take it.

They’re certainly more than adequate performers, and we had no clammy crotches. Inside, all the seams are taped, while the outside crotch panel is made of a heavier material to resist abrasion. Unlike some waterproof shorts, the Attacks have features you’d expect on conventional baggy shorts, such as side pockets and Velcro adjusters on the legs.

Fit is good, with generous leg length that extends well below the knee, and well-shaped legs to minimize bunching around the knees. Shown in the picture are the optional Attack braces (£15 extra) that attach via adjustable Velcro tabs and convert the Attacks into semi-bib shorts that don’t rely on waistbands. It’s a good idea, but the broad, adjustable waistband was comfortable already.
