Our review
Lacking in some features, but performance is excellent and the price tag is reasonable

These waterproofs are even more minimalist than the Gore Alp-X shorts. The list of things they don’t have is long – including pockets, waist adjustment or tabs to pull the legs in with.

On the plus side, the Wickhams are made of the highly breathable but rarely seen eVENT fabric. We’re not convinced that shorts really need the levels of breathability offered by it, but we didn’t manage to work up an uncomfortable sweat, and the material has a reassuringly robust feel.

The lack of hem adjusters is mitigated by the close fit – there’s not much scope for puddles to leap up your legs. A reinforced seat should ensure durability in gritty conditions, and some reflective piping will help you be seen.

The fit is good, although more room between the waist and crotch wouldn’t go amiss. Despite the fact that eVENT fabric is expensive, the price is entirely reasonable as long as the fit is right.
