Assos F1 Mille S5 Bib | $219.95
BikeRadar verdict
"Serious shorts. Some things are worth paying extra for."
Assoswas the first manufacturer to use the CyTech chamois in its shorts. When it was introduced this synthetic, seamless stretch pad revolutionised shorts and brought in a new era of comfort.
For 2008 Assos is collaborating with CyTech to hopefully better its already excellent previous designs.
The new waffle structure of the pad looks pleasingly simple and does away with unnecessary seams and complex shapes. But it’s not until you ride on it that you appreciate the superior performance over most other rivals.
The anatomic cut with its stretchy nature perfectly places the ‘Elastic Interface’ chamois against your groin. The new design is far more breathable than any CyTech chamois we’ve ridden and is the best we’ve tested. The whole thing feels exceptionally light and comfortable.
The rest of the short is executed with Assos’ typical, almost obsessive attention to detail. Anatomically cut panels use the highest grade breathable and wicking fabrics.
The tough but stretchy mix supports your muscles really well and that supportive feel remains there ride after ride and, more importantly, wash after wash. Assos’s leg grippers and bib all enhance the fit and make the F1 Mille S5 the best shorts we’ve ridden this season.
They’re available in various colours and come complete with wash bag, cleanser and chamois cream.

User review of Assos F1 Mille S5 Bib
I find it difficult to believe that it's necessary to spend £127 for a pair of shorts. I bought a pair of excellent Polaris bib shorts at the CTC National Rally in York at the weekend ... for £5! I did a 100km ride in them on Wednesday and they were perfectly comfortable.
I think here the right word to use is ... rip-off.

don't knock Assos kit if you haven't tried it. I've numerous pairs of the previous series of shorts and whilst fairly expensive, are vastly more comfortable than cheap shorts and are made of much higher quality material, hence they last longer.
You only have to look around at any of the sportive events to see how popular Assos kit is, and its not without reason.

User review of Assos F1 Mille S5 Bib
I've been using these shorts now for about 3 months, with regular and frequent use, and washing. They are, simply, the most comfortable shorts I have ever tried.
Previously I was using (and still do use) some Assos F1 Equipe bib shorts, which are sold as a tighter fit than regular F1's. These new S5 versions are less constrictive - as would be expected, but they fit noticeably better, with less bunching. The 'chamois' feels a lot more natural and unobstrusive, and yet perfectly comfortable even after 5 hours on the road. They do feel a lot tighter on the shoulders when not in a tuck (who cares?), but when in position, there is very little to notice that they are there at all.
Trying on these shorts can prove to be very expensive - their comfort far outshines anything else out there, that it's nigh impossible to go back to cheaper shorts.
