The Merstons didn't prove to be exceptional insulators during lab testing but you do get a generous amount of upper body coverage and a double thickness of brush-backed Thermo-stretch fabric over your knees, so you won’t creak in anything but the coldest of weather.
The Coolmax-lined insert is stretchy, breathable and antibacterial, although we found the cushioning to be adequate rather than outstanding. You also get non-flappy ankle zips and silicone grippers that stop the legs riding up, and a comfort zip comes in handy for mid-ride pit stops.
Not many of the seams are flat-stitched but there are none to rub in that crucial area behind your knees, while acres of reflective material gets you seen from all angles in night-time traffic. Available in various other versions with and without seatpads, including a non-Hi Viz model for women (£54.99).
