Three-piece steel chainsets are indestructible assets for jumping and hardcore use, but they're also massively heavy, too. At least they used to be, but not any more. Cambridge intellectuals Ison have produced this version of their much abused, but much loved, Gusset Pigmy tubular cromo cranks in Reynolds' unique 853 steel alloy.
Not only is 853 extremely light for its strength (similar to titanium), but it actually increases its strength in the weld area rather than losing it like other steels. Add forged pedal and axle knuckles at either end and this means the R-Series arms are 20 per cent (150g) lighter than the already low weight Pigmy cromo arms, but just as stiff and strong.
The bolt drive adaptor also means you can mount a wide range of spiders or single chainrings directly to the arms - and they come in black powdercoat or chrome finish. The crank arms are designed to fit onto any 19mm diameter, 36-tooth splined axle, so you can upgrade from other three-piece cranks easily, but Gusset also do a range of suitable axles and bottom brackets for MTB or BMX-style frame shells.
A full BB setup will cost you from £50 upwards, but the cranks are very reasonably priced when you consider that there's nothing comparable available. It's certainly a great way to get maximum strength under your feet without excess weight or instant poverty.
