Shimano XTR M970 Rapidfire Shifters | $229.99
BikeRadar verdict
"The slickest, smoothest multi-direction shifting – if you keep the cables clean"
Shimano’s top of the range Rapidfire are the smoothest and slickest around, and are still less than £100.
Low-profile pods pack in Shimano’s latest multi-direction, multi-gear shifting on an adjustable mount that works round all brake levers. Multiple ball bearing internals and alloy triggers give a superbly crisp feel and they’re significantly lighter than XT.
Some testers used to SRAM shifting found the action almost too light to rely on in really rough situations, but Shimano fans find SRAM too clunky, so it’s a personal thing.
Smooth cables are more critical with XTR than X.0 but the £80 saving will buy you a lot of fresh wire, even if you choose GoreTex cables for total sealing.
