Spank Subrosa 747 EVO flat handlebar £60

Ideal for lowering your front end

BikeRadar score 4/5

The Subrosa 747 Evo is pushing the envelope of flat bars with a 747mm (29.4in) width and riser-like sweep. Although described as flat there’s a bit of rise – the taper from bulge to ends is shallower on top than below, which is a neat manufacturing trick.

Spank make much of their Dual Extreme Gradual Taper butting process, which is said to do all sorts of clever things inside the bar. At 277g the Subrosa is certainly light for its width.

The bit you can see is the thicker sections at the outer ends of the bars. This is to minimise impact damage, but if you feel the need for bar ends the thick ends will accommodate those too. The thick ends do mean that Spank don’t recommend cutting the ends down very far, but if you didn’t want a really wide bar you wouldn’t have bought this one anyway.

You get gobs of control with a bar this wide, and the Subrosa’s a great choice for a hard-riding long-travel (or 29in, or indeed a long-travel 29er) bike. The finish features shot-peened sections where stems and grips get clamped on and shiny elsewhere, which gives a distinctive look. Engraved angle marks on the bulge aid setup.
