On-One Mary
BikeRadar verdict
"Quirky shaping that you'll either love or hate, but gives good control"
Shopping partners
On-One calls the Mary handlebar an "extreme sweep riser bar". The long grip area has room for whatever controls you need and with grip sections angled at around 40 degrees, the grip centre span is similar to 'normal' bars. We know riders who love this radical back-sweep, and there's enough forward offset for you to use the same stem if you just fancy trying a Mary for a change. However, there are also times when you'll just long for the simplicity of a normal riser bar. Like On-One's Fleegle, the Mary is a tough bar offering a surprising amount of control on different types of terrain, but it takes a bit longer than the Fleegle to get the best out of it.

I have a 29er so these bars make a lot more sense. They do have a big sweep so the term 'cruiser bars' is about right. That said, they do have a very good feel once you do get used to them. They do feel a lot narrower than standard bars, but do work surprisingly well. On my local XC loop I found that I can go between trees that used to make me stop, which gives me a small advantage over my friends.
The bars run the hands at a very comfortable angle for general XC, especially on the climbs, but take getting used to on technical stuff. Having said that, I cleared some northshore I had previously failed to clear on a bike using standard bars.
I run mine with longer BMX grips, so that I get a slightly wider range of hand positions. Trying gear pods on these bars with the long BMX grips didn't work because of the bend of the bars, but I run singlespeed anyway so I only have brake levers to worry about. If you are running gears, use standard grips. Sorted.
When out on the road, there are no real other hand positions as you get on, for example, the moots Ti bars or the Fleegle bars, but then I use a road bike normally, and love the change of hand positions on the drop bars. So I'm just being harsh really.
I love the comfort of these bars, and if you have a 29er/69er/commuter/cruiser bike, they might be worth trying...

I have the Mary bars on my Swift Folder, and I'm happy with them. I run a twist-grip gear shifter so I don't have many options if I want to avoid straight bars (which make my elbows ache), but the long grip sections on the Mary give me plenty of room and a comfortable hand angle. The bars are well made, and I had no trouble ordering from On-One's website, or getting delivery here in Australia.
Any drawbacks? There is no straight section in the middle of the bar, other than the stem clam point. This makes mounting lights etc. a little awkward. For my build, the bar is a *little* bit too wide, but this only makes itself felt when riding into a strong headwind.
