Shimano’s advertising line for the mighty Deore XT pedals should be ‘If only everything in life was a reliable as a Deore XT pedal’.  These descendants of the original clipless mountain bike pedals come close to being the default trail pedals for their sheer reliability. 

There are cheaper Shimano SPDs than the Deore XT  – the budget M520 costs around £20, for example. However, your money gets you uprated bearings and excellent sealing, longer spells between services, a lighter weight and better long-term durability.

Okay, so the main Achilles heel of SPD pedals – they tend to fill with mud – remains. But it doesn't seem to stop them working. We’ve lost count of the times we’ve been astounded when throwing a mud-caked shoe at a lump of crud on the end of a crank arm, only for the pedal to defy all probability and engage with its tell-tale click. Fantastic.

The pedals to bbuy if you want to ride like the wind and simply forget about your pedals.

    These are a superb clipless pedal &, in my humble opinion, deserve 5 stars. Yes, they are more expensive than the 540s but the build quality & endurance are better (decent ball-bearings, better quality materials, bomb-proof lubricant seal, etc). I've used these for over a year now & they've taken everything i've thrown at them & I can testify to their amazing ability to still operate when shoe cleats + pedals are coated in thick clay! They're pretty easy to clean & a quick spray with a water inhibitor will keep any rust at bay. Mine have taken quite a hammering but after a quick clean they look almost as good as new. You can fine tune the release tension on the springs so anyone scared of getting "trapped" if the bike starts to fall over, needn't worry providing you use Shimano's multi-release cleats. I wholeheartedly recommend these.

Lightweight and high performance using a forged alloy body, chromoly axle and a revised cleat interface for increased stability. Beautifully constructed with a strong and slender spindle using an 8 mm Allen wrench mounting system. Easy entry system and tension adjustment provides plenty of support and holds the cleat firmly in place.
