Crank Brothers Smarty Pedals

BikeRadar verdict
"Cheap, cheerful and with the usual excellent Crank Brothers performance"
Shopping partners
Crank Brothers' four-sided Eggbeater platform pedal design has been phenomenally successful, and it has led them to develop two-sided platform pedals with the same feel and mud-shedding performance but at a lower price. The newest such pedal, called the Smarty, is essentially a slightly larger and cheaper version of the successful Candy all-mountain pedal. At 282g it weighs more than the Candy because it's a bit bigger but you won't really notice a few extra grams.
Riders who found the Candy's platform too small, but the Mallet downhill pedal too big, have fallen head over heels for the Smarty. The pedal's combination of a clipless centre section and a proper platform means it also appeals to riders who go off piste and need to unclip on rough sections. The pedal also comes in a choice of a blue or black plastic body and a selection of clip-on bumpers with contrasting colours.
Out on the trails, the Smarty is every bit as good as the other Crank Brothers pedals - in fact, once you're clipped in, you'll be hard pushed to know which model pedal you're using. Check out the full Crank Brothers range at www. crankbros.com.

I was going to buy a pair of these from ebay after reading the bike radar review but there are large number of bad user reviews on the mtbr website.http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Pedal/product_126196.shtml

I've tried various pedal makes since going clipless 2 years ago. These are the pedals that give most confidence as you can clip out easy, which is good for my bad knee too. I have worn my bearings out in about 18months, mostly from using them on single speed bikes, all weathers and on some hard riding in the lakes, so is very acceptable. I'd definatly say worth a try if you find some cheap ones on ebay.

Seemed very good to start with but quickly started to become lose and grind. The bearing end caps fall out very easy and once the dirt is in they start to destroy themselves very quickly. Have upgraded to Candy Cs which seem much better suited...

Solid system but unreliable.
I like the way Crank Brothers pedals work and all that but 4 months and the bearings go, and you can't service these ones either. Give me a break.

These came with the bike and after about 150 miles they are really loose and crunching. Tried to take them apart but seems impossible and have now cross threaded one of the nuts. NUTS.
Looks like I'll be putting the emergency DMR's back on while I persuade the accountant I need a new pair.
Never had this problem with the old shimano's

absolute garbage used them for five miles and all the bearings fell out and that was a gentle ride, i would not recommend them and mine are going back to the shop £36 down the drain!!

After the second ride one pedal fell apart sending ball bearings through the bush and rendering the pedals irreparable.
I contacted Crankbrothers but they didn't seem to be able, or want, to offer an explanation choosing instead to tell me that they are an "economical option". I don't think $50 for less than two rides is very economical at all.
I really would have liked to continue riding crankbrothers but I don't want to risk my pedals causing me to crash.

Utter SHiite these pedals.
Mine lasted 36 miles before developing play in them. That 50p per mile wasted on these dogg egg pedals.
