Wellgo W-01 pedals review

BikeRadar verdict
"Lightweight SPD compatible performance at an excellent price "

SPD fans will feel instantly at home with the compatible Wellgo pedal. It doesn’t have quite the ‘thunk’ that comes with the positive engagement or release of the Shimano, which might take some getting used to, but we didn’t find it an issue. In fact, it delivers a minimally smooth ride.
There wasn’t as much float as we’d normally expect from SPDs and we were aware of feeling the cleat on the axle more, but that didn’t prove to be a problem in use. The overwhelming benefit of this pedal is its weight. Coming in at 300g it’s nicely light at a not-too-shabby price.
Although it's proved to be durable throughout our test, we have to say that it wouldn’t be our first choice for something that was required to bear the brunt and grunt of our workaday trail bashing. But for a lightweight bike build, or even a second set of pedals (if you already run SPDs), it’s hard to argue with the W-01’s price, weight and quiet no-fuss performance combination.

The pedals pictured are not the Wellgo W-01s. They are the Wellgo WAM-M19s, as can clearly be seen etched into the foot plate, and can be confirmed by looking on the Wellgo web site. Both models are also sold under different brands such as Powerplay.
If this review is of the W-01 model, I've got a pair, and they are pretty good. It is also worth noting that 300g is the weight for the pair, they aren't adjustable or serviceable to my knowledge, and they can be had for at least 10 quid less than the stated price. Also the difference in engagement and float compared to Shimano SPDs is very slight, hardly worth mentioning.

I take back my former review. The non-drive-side pedal of my pair has started refusing to release my foot. I can get my foot halfway out, but the edge that holds the rear of the cleat has become so scratched that it won't disengage smoothly. I've got a bruised knee and a scratched saddle as a result (the saddle was bought at the same time so I've learned my lesson: don't install two new bits of kit simultaneously.) Changing the spring tension, using different cleats - nothing works. I've used Shimano SPDs for years with no problems. They may be heavier, but at least they last longer than a few months.
