Time Z Control Pedals | $109.21
BikeRadar verdict
"A great all-mountain clipless pedal that deserves wider recognition"
Typically for Time, Z-Controls are good in the mud, with plenty of space forward of the bars for clag to fall through. Probably one of the most solidly made pedals arounf too.
If you’re a mud-loving rider or have delicate knees, you’ll appreciate the self-clearing design and wire cleat retention jaws which have 1mm more lateral float.
The Z-Control has a large, double-sided alloy body in an H-shape that houses the traditional double wire bar cleat retainers.
The body of the pedal is cast, then machined to give a distinctive look and add some sharp shoe-gripping working edges to the pedal body.
This one has been the favourite pedal for many downhill riders and general ‘off-piste’ enthusiasts, because, although the cleat bars always remain proud of the body, it’s a very stable place for you to put a clipped-out foot in an emergency.

User review of Time Z Control Pedals
I've been using these pedals for a while now, after getting sick of all the mud problems with my SPD's, and I'm very impressed. I now have them on 2 of my bikes.
The one thing to remember is that you need to point your toe down to clip in rather than just stamping on SPD's, but other than that it's just a case of 'clip in and go!' Getting your foot in exactly the right place to clip in is less of an issue with these than my previous 646 & 647's and becasue odf that I feel more confident using them. They're also slightly lighter & have a better contact area that the pedals I replaced..
Bearings seem to be holding up fine as well

These are often recommended for beginners, which is why I came to own a pair. Unfortunately I've often found them a bugger to release, which isn't ideal when starting out on clipless for the first time.

I prefer the smoother action of these and similar systems (eg Crank Bros) to SPD. They're harder to get into than Crank Bros, but have an easier / smoother / more reassuring exit than SPDs and they're better in the mud. I'm advised they're better than Crank Bros in terms of maintenance, hence why I bought them.
Wheezee, which way round have you got the shoe cleats?
These work like Crank Bros pedals in that they have an 'advanced rider' option: if you put the cleat marked "L" on the right shoe, they need more twist to get out of. While I like the advanced setting on my old eggbeaters, I prefer the normal setting on these.
