"Right now, this is the best general-purpose saddle on the market"

By Justin Loretz & Guy Kesteven

The Gobi has everything we look for in a saddle – some flex in the hull, enough swoop to the spine of the saddle to make you feel the ‘hammock’ benefit, but without feeling boggy.

The new shape for 2008 is more supportive than the old one thanks to a more defined seating area towards the tail -- something we appreciated after the third hour in the hills. The nose has been squared off, the seating area increased slightly and the hammock effect reduced.

One of its key features is the signature kick to the tail. This isn’t just for show; when rolling up to a long climb, it enables you to push back on the kick and use your lower back to press harder on the pedals. And if you need to keep the front end down, the Gobi has one of the best-shaped noses to slide forward on to.

Titanium rails - K:ium in 'dang the rules of spelling & punctuation' Fi’zi:k-speak - counter the weight of the padding, and help keep the Gobi at a weight - 250g - that still appeals to racers and marathon riders. Steel rails are also available for a 30g weight penalty.

There’s enough reinforcing to survive a few crashes and the unique ICS (Integrated Clip System) allows you to clip Fi’zi:k’s bags and tail light directly into the saddle.

We weren't keen on the looks of the old Fizik Gobi, but it now looks a bit more purposeful.

Is the new version 'better'? That's up for debate, because the numbers and weight are largely the same. However, if you're a rider who logs the miles and just finds 'race' saddles a pain in the plums, then the Gobi XM is for you.

You can get the Gobi XM in various colours, or even plump for a custom colourway by designing it online at www.fizik.com.

More in the range

The Gobi XM is part of Fi’zi:k's new range of saddles based on the concept of matching your ideal seat to the travel of your bike. There is an evolved Aliante XM Gamma, with more padding in a broader nose for long rattly rides and the super solid Free:k freeride saddle gets a new brown finish.

Also brand new are the two Zea:k ASS (Action Specific Seating) all-mountain saddles. Designed for easy movement on technical terrain, they use plastic thigh grip panels and a flat top design.
