Bontrager Mud X folding mountain bike tyre £30

Decent all-round grip

BikeRadar score 3.5/5

The Mud X has a classic spike pattern with a twist – well, a cut or two. The multiple block sipes (small cuts in the tops of the tread blocks) and softer compound on the shoulders give extra grip on roots and rocks.

It's light enough to be lively, and the mid-spaced, mid-height knobs still roll well enough that you can leave it on in mixed spring or summer conditions.

A large-volume carcass means it can be run at slightly lower pressure, for more grip, and a tubeless-ready bead and tough sidewalls – you'll wear the tread out before these give up – make for an easy conversion to a flat-free future.

The tight tubeless bead makes the Mud X awkward to fit straight though, so be prepared to over-pressure and then deflate to get it on nicely. Overall, it’s good value and one of the few 29er mud tyre options out there.
