Maxxis Aspen Exception Series 2.25in tyre review

BikeRadar verdict
"Truly great tyres that are a lot more fun than they should be"

The all-new Aspen from Maxxis has two distinct personalities. On the one hand, it’s a lightweight, fast-rolling cross-country tyre, and on the other, it’s a high-volume, sticky trail demon that’s most at home railing corners.
The Aspen combines tacky 62a rubber with Maxxis’s Exception casing to provide grip via large side knobs, similar to those on their High Roller tyre. The high volume carcass adds to the aggressive feel too.
When out on the trail, the Aspens roll extremely quickly but never feel skittish. As soon as you get into a turn those side knobs hook up like Velcro, inspiring confidence. Their feedback is good and you always feel on top of what the tyre’s doing.
When climbing, they dig in well despite their shallow centre tread. The round profile might not be to everyone’s taste, but on fast, flowing trails, the Aspens are some of the best tyres out there.

looks very similar to the advantage tyre. Love maxxis but their sidewalls are getting a bit thin. I would prefer them to be beefier sacrificing 50g or so. At present they are too thin and cut through too easily. Ok so you get the double side wall versions but they weigh much more...... Maxxis - sort it out

I've started running these as my three-season front tyre (I have the 2.1 on the back) and first impressions are that they're excellent. Extremely quick on hardpack or loose-over-hard conditions and they corner brilliantly, inspiring a lot of confidence. They've also done okay in the odd patch of mud I've run into on Surrey's North Downs. Another plus is that they slip on and off rims very easily - little need for levers here. Only a few minor concerns so far. They may not be all that resistant to point punctures - I picked one up very quickly on their maiden ride (although the low profile tread is bound to present a bit of a risk in this respect). They also clog a bit if the mud's sticky. My greater interest, though, is how they'll get on if the trails get drier and looser - the tread may start to swim a bit.
