Panaracer Razer MX 2.3 £27

You don't have to look far to see where Panaracer got its, er, inspiration for this tyre, but the Ralphzer (sorry Razer), is a quality speedster at a great price. The flat centre tread makes it the fastest in our straightline tests.

You don't have to look far to see where Panaracer got its, er, inspiration for this tyre, but the Ralphzer (sorry Razer), is a quality speedster at a great price.

The flat centre tread makes it the fastest in our straightline tests, and it hooks up on a far wider variety of surfaces than you'd expect, thanks to wide, fast-clearing spaces between the tread. The tread compound is harder than the Ralph, though, and the little file bits can clog with mud, which means it's more likely to slip in the damp. Medial and shoulder tread is really good though so once you've got it leant over it carves really well. Saying that, braking slide means we'd be wary of using it on the front.

The Razer is a bit of a bloater in terms of weight, although this does buy you extra durability and means it doesn't ricochet off rock strikes as alarmingly as the Ralph. The fact it's £10 cheaper than its nemesis is another bonus, too.
