BikeRadar score4/5

Schwalbe's Black Shark Mud tyre has been around for years but has recently seen an update in carcass technology.

The tread is a wide spaced, well supported low spike design which digs deep into anything soft for excellent traction and it clears quickly.

The soft Gooey Gluey compound sticks to rocks and roots well too and it's stable at low pressure.

The tyre feels square when turning into corners though and it's definitely noisy and slow on hardpack.

The 2.25in version uses the same Double Carcass design as Schwalbe's Al Mighty Freeride tyre, and it shrugs off rock edges and rough landings well for a sub kilo tyre.

Pricing is rather high.
