Schwalbe Dirty Dan mountain bike tyre review
BikeRadar verdict
"Great all-round winter and mud-plugging tyre"
Shopping partners
The Dirty Dan is probably the best kept secret that Schwalbe have in their tyre armoury. The well spaced block treads, each topped with twin siping channels, have a slightly rumblesome feel on faster surfaces but without feeling too draggy.
They have enough angle and edge to cut through the mire to find you forward drive. The compound Schwalbe use, in conjunction with the surefooted nature on wet rock and roots, means the Dirty Dan is a great choice for mixed condition winter rides where you’re likely to face a variety of terrain and surface challenges. We’d like a tubeless-ready version.

Looks suspiciously like an overpriced non-tubeless ready Mud X

Also looks like the Maxxis Medusas, which are ace , and cheaper!
I do like Schwalbe tyres though.

It rolls faster than a Mud X, is lighter at 435g, the knobs are in an entirely different pattern, it's triple compound, it's also 127 EPI, otherwise it's just like a Mud X.
The 2011 range of Schwalbe tyres are tubeless ready.

Fast, light, grippy, low rolling resistance mud tyre. Brilliant!

I have had 3 rides on these tyres hitting very deep mud and clay hardpack roots rocks tarmac the lot totalling 50 miles 7500ft climbing on wet loose ground...I am running the tubeless version at 30 psi back 25 front. I am gobsmaked at how much grip these give me! last year i ran swampthings and wasnt that impressed on roots. These just grip and grip and grip! rolling resistance isnt an issue and managable as well. Braking is a dream in deep wet stuff where i would normally expect to slide off line, you can predict the break point as well even on loosepack they are great. Anyone who has ridden round my local trail area (guisborough woods) knows there are plenty of free ride trails you normally stay clear of when its wet. Not now i can hit any trail i like. My last ride out inspired me to post these comments. I was exploring a new training route for winter only and came accross a section of pure clay about 30m worth (image building site!), normally you wouldnt even attempt it for fear of ending up ankle deep in mud and find a walkable path around. However i thought lets see how good these tyres really are. To my amazement these things just cut right down and gripped like an end of ride snot! mud bath cleared lets see if they are clogged ...nope no clogging cleared just as quick. Its no wonder Danny Hart had so much confidence on his amazing run with the DH version of these things (megga ride hats off to him). I dont think i will look anywhere else for many years for a wet weather/winter tyre! No signs of wear yet either, yet to test them in snow ...will post results when i do. Big smile on my face as i now look forward to winter riding!!
