Bontrager Revolt Super X | $45
BikeRadar verdict
"Smooth all-rounder with useful tubeless-ready capability at a great price"
Bontrager’s Revolt Super X has been around for a long, long time, and is still a decent summer all rounder. The carcass technology and reasonable price ensure that it will be around for a lot longer, too.
The Revolt Super X now offers a tight tubeless-ready tyre bead in a regular-priced tyre. This locks it in place at low pressures when you’re sealing it with latex rather than an inner tube. However, the rest of the carcass is still a lot lighter and more pliable than a full UST tyre, so you’re not at a disadvantage if you do run a tube in this tyre.
The dual-compound ‘GumBi’ tread itself is a happy medium in terms of summer performance. It’s not super-fast, but it loves swooping smoothly loose and leafy woods with a random selection of drifty dirt, rocks and roots, where that low pressure smoothness really helps mould to the terrain.
The centre strip gives predictable traction for climbing and braking and the rounded carcass also rolls nicely into and out of corners.
There's enough medial and buttressed shoulder tread to throw it in pretty hard too, and it slides controllably if you overload it anyway.
The low, wide-spaced tread cleans fast in muddy conditions too, so you're more likely to find at least occasional grip than you are with deeper treaded tyres here.
The Revolt Super X is a predictable slider when you do start pushing, hard too, although it’s definitely better suited to smooth riders than smash-and-grab aggro merchants.
Bontrager sent us the full tubeless version, which is why the weight looks high, but standard versions are in the light and lively low 500g area. Prices are very good through the range too.
