Continental Vertical Protection 2.3 Black Chili Tyres (09) | $72.89
BikeRadar verdict
"A much more eager and slightly more tenacious Vertical Protection tyre for your moolah..."
Vertical Protection tyres are by no means new kids on the block, but Conti have breathed some fresh life into them by releasing this limited edition, which features their excellent Black Chili compound.
The ‘nano particle’ polymers in this techy rubber give the tyre compound the ability to deform around objects for greater traction, without needing softer, slower rolling rubber. The tyre is marked up as 2.3in, but its physical dimensions are more like most other manufacturers’ 2.5in offerings. The tyre has a very round profile, which gives it a huge depth of casing, making a voluminous air cushion between you and the trail.
The decreased rolling resistance the Black Chili compound offers is instantly noticeable and the tyre flies along on hard surfaces. In the corners, the tyrehooks up soft or hardtrail floor well, but does let go quite early due to the combination of the round profile and minimal support for the side knobs.
Despite the reasonable weight of 754g and humungous volume, the casing offers good support and can be run at low pressures without the risk of folding when cornered hard.

45 quid !. wait a minute. was hoping they would invent a tyre that doesnt puncture and never needs to be inflated. then i would pay 45 quid happily.

1. I got some Conti Speed King tyres with a new bike, fast on the forest trail, useless in the UK. Never again.
2 I do love my conti travel contact tyres on the commuter, £20 for the reflective edition with a free inner tube
3. But £45? For a normal MTB tyre? Way too much.
4. Chain Reaction are selling Michelin Mud Tyres for £6 -including a schraeder inner tube. They are my reference MTB tyre for this winter. Good in mud, value for money. Light.

Conti Mountain Kings (not the equally high priced puncture protection versions) are great - soooo much grip. I kinda agree about the race kings - save them for family trail riding or racing!
As for these - I expect they won't even fit most hardtrail or even upto 140mm travel bikes, so if that's the case only those with 160mm+ bikes will use them and chances are these guys have already spent a massive chunk of cash on the bike, so a £45 tyre wont be such great shakes!

No, it is great shakes! I have to ride a few miles of tarmac to get around on my big full sus, and I'm sick of tyres wearing out in the middle super quick. Especially at the crazy prices we are getting now.
MBUK haven't mentioned the wear rate here. If "the tyre flies along on hard surfaces" but "without needing softer, slower rolling rubber" .....how does that affect the wear rate?

Agreed on the mountain kings, i run the 2.4 versions and they've been great so far and only £15.99 each not 45 which is outragous for a bike tire!!!

I used to love Conti Vertical Pro's back in the day but there is so much better available these days - Maxxis High Rollers or Advantage are sooo much better and miles cheaper. Vertical Pro's have had their day.
