Maxxis CrossMark Steel 2.1 | $35.78
BikeRadar verdict
"Fast, bone dry straight-liner, but scary anywhere else"
Maxxis are known for big-hit tyres, but this design is one of the fastest around. The flat, square centreline tread gives it low rolling resistance for outstanding tarmac/fireroad speed. The rounded profile means it drops smoothly and easily into corners too.
The centreline design slips without warning on roots, rocks and wet grass, though, or if you brake or accelerate too hard. The recessed detail blocks quickly in damp conditions and once grip is gone, it's really gone. The 70 duro rubber of this basic version makes this even more obvious, but even the 62 duro Exception version needs nursing in technical situations unless the trails have been bone dry for days. The hard rubber will last for years though.
