Maxxis Xenith Hors Categorie tyre £20.99

Decently fast high-pressure tyre for your road bike.

BikeRadar score 4/5

The Maxxis Xenith tyre arrived just too late for our grouptest last issue so we roll-down tested it head-to-head against our benchmark all round race tyre from that test: the Michelin Pro 2 Race.

Not surprisingly, The Xenith wasn't quite as quick. However, it was only slightly slower than the Schwalbe Ultremo and ahead of the Panaracer Extreme Light. So it still falls into the category of decently fast high-pressure tyre for your road bike.

It probably won't be your first choice time trial tyre but it would be fine for bunch riding. It's a dual compound tyre and its reputed better cornering traction isn't something we'd argue with.

On top of the 120tpi casing there's a nylon breaker strip to help prevent punctures. It's certainly tougher than the flat-out TT clinchers but not better than the Michelin Pro 2 Race, which is faster. The price is pretty good, though.
