"Not cheap or as light as full carbon sets, but a practical and usable speed wheel"

By Guy Kesteven

Mavic's hybrid carbon/alloy SLR might not have the headline-grabbing stats of some full carbon wheels, but it’s a very practical, versatile and control-enhancing high velocity wheelset.

At 1,662g it’s nearly a pound heavier than Mavic’s completely composite Cosmic Ultimate wheels. As most of the extra weight is sitting right at the outer edge in the machined alloy rim, it’s not as quick to pick up speed as lighter carbon-rimmed wheels either.

However, it’s on a par with comparable semi alloy wheels, and the alloy clincher rim creates a much more practical tyre for UK use.

For a start, you get far more predictable braking – particularly in wet weather or on long descents – than with a carbon rim. The innovative R2R (rim to rim) carbon-blade spokes also give a tight and accurate tracking feel.

The 52mm rim stays reasonably stable in crosswind situations and doesn’t make steering too stubborn either. This makes the SLRs superb for use on more technical courses with twisty descents.

Manufacturers description

Directly inspired from the Ultimate, the Cosmic Carbon SLR is the new Mavic reference in aero clincher wheels. A redesigned 52mm carbon/ aluminum rim reduces weight by 20 grams and the same R2R carbon spoke design as the Ultimate make this wheel the perfect blend of Aerodynamics, lightweight, stiffness and ease-of-use.
