"Stiff, good-looking UST wheels, but heavy, slow to engage and overpriced"

By Guy Kesteven

Mavic’s mid-price wheels share CrossMax design cues for killer looks, but performance is less exciting.

They’re certainly a sturdy set of rollers and the black/silver machined rim bed and fat bodied block flange hubs look ace.

The 24 flat-bladed steel spokes are also proving tougher than the Max alloy versions.

They’re stiff for their category and the rims are UST tubeless ready as standard.

Overall weight is slightly high for the price and the QR levers feel and look cheap.

From experience the freehubs also need regular TLC and occasional new bits to keep them sweet.

Mavic are currently setting up a new dedicated UK service centre though, so direct support should be good.

I've got a set of these wheels and the comment about weight, is a bit unfair. If you shop around you'll pay a lot less than the RRP, I paid £260.

If you want a relatively stiff, genuine UST wheel then IMO they are good value. The quoted weight is 1810 grams, only 160 g heavier that the Crossmax ST which is twice the price. Although in reality they are slightly heavier that the figure quoted.

Guy is spot on about the QRs, they look and feel rubbish. However they do the job they are meant to. I bought a pair of Superstar components, which are good quality, have a better action and lighter to boot.
