Halo Freedom Disc (08)
BikeRadar verdict
"Not light, but seriously tough. Upgraded bearings create a great value all-rounder."
The often-imitated Freedom Disc – a proven ultra-tough and all-round wheelset for those on a tight budget – gets updated with a new rear hub for even better performance.
They’re not light, but you get a lot of strength, versatility and value in return.
The deep V 28mm Freedom Discs are seriously sturdy hoops that’ll take downhill/freeride levels of hammering.
The rim is impressively stiff and strong and will handle pretty big (2.3-2.4in) tyres without them getting undercut and unstable in corners.
The stiffness does mean they're more pinch-prone at lower pressures though, so keep them pumped.
The weight means that acceleration and overall agility aren’t brilliant, but they’re great for more brutal riders.
The Spin Doctor hubs are switchable from quick release to 20mm through-axle at the front (but watch you don't lose the adaptors in transit) and quick release, Saint, 10 or 14mm bolted axles at the back.
The new Pro rear gets full cartridge bearings plus an evolved swamp/stomp-proof freehub that saves more than 100g.
The bearings are well sealed and have lasted well, while the grease port extends freehub life too.
Available in black or white powder coat finish and there's a clown bike, sorry, 29er version too.
