Halo Mercury Wheels
BikeRadar verdict
"A lightweight value aero wheel package"
What Halo has tried to do with the Mercury wheelset is offer a lightweight yet good value set-up for those who want a little aero advantage in their life. They come with 30mm Mercury deep section aluminium rims, which certainly helps to cheat the wind to a degree and makes them useful not only on the flat but equally good in most conditions, even the hills.
They run Halo's 6Drive series hubs with silky smooth sealed bearings. The 16-spoke front runs with one-cross lacing while the 24-spoke rear goes with two-cross for increased stiffness. They come with double-butted spokes, which work fine but we feel that bladed spokes would have certainly added to the aero rims to get the best out of them for time trialling. Out on the road they're certainly stiff in a straight line while still offering plenty of confidence even when really hammering into hard fast corners. As for looks, we think they're spot on with their all-black stealth finish. They're available for Campag or Shimano set-ups.
So has Halo achieved a lightweight value aero wheel package? In a word, yes. The front one tips the scales at 661g while the rear is 885g, so they tick the low weight box. As for the quality, this appears to be all there too and we had no problems during testing - so that box gets ticked. The price speaks for itself. While the Mercurys might not have the name factor of the more established players, they have all the ingredients for a good value set of aluminium aero wheels for those who don't want to go all the way with bigger, more expensive deep section wheels.
