Elan bikes are developed and built in the Slovenian Alps and have become something of a cult brand in the UK in recent years. The Able One is Elan's simple, but super strong freeride frame, and it's certainly one of - if not THE - cheapest option for those wanting to use Manitou's OnePointFive inch diameter front forks.
The monster head tube is supported by long gussets on top and down tubes, with another long saddle gusset spreading load from the shock mount. The top tube is ovalised and kinked for crotch clearance and an uninterrupted seat tube means easy saddle height adjustment. The swingarm itself uses a chunky machine cut upright with deep, cross braced, high level rear stays extending back to solid windowed dropouts.
The frame is fully disc brake-specific and there's an ISCG mount welded onto the internally machined but thick ended bottom bracket shell. There's plenty of mud room for big tyres too, but the swingarm bearings are only semi shielded so beware if you're jet washing.
The simple swingarm layout means you'll always get some pedalling and suspension interaction/interruption, but the flipside is extra control of bike attitude through brakes and pedals. The long 225mm shock means leverages aren't too high and the old school Fox Vanilla RC shock is also super tuneable aftermarket. Elan also gives the option of the more rider-adjustable and smooth pedalling platform equipped Manitou Swinger Coil 4 Way for an extra £26.
The communicative and utterly predictable suspension benefits from a solid feeling of stiffness that runs through the whole frame from big fork to back end. A slack 67 degree head angle gives plenty of front end stability for confident speedwork, while a relatively steep 72 degree seat angle means it needs plenty of weight forward to get the SPV valve in the fork working and keep the front wheel biting. It also makes it easy to drop yourself behind the saddle for the really steep stuff. A reasonable top tube length means you've still got room for breathing when trying to winch the 9lb chassis back up the hill between runs too. The Able is also available in various complete bike and frame & fork packages.
