HighFive Energy Source 4:1 | $20.69
BikeRadar verdict
"Mind-boggling amounts of technology for a drink. It does the trick, but the cost is a bit prohibitive"
As the name suggests, this drink from High5 contains carbohydrate and protein in a 4:1 ratio. Confusingly the carbohydrate element is made up of another 4:1 ratio – ‘Super Carbs’ glucose and fructose – designed to increase energy delivery to working muscles and reduce dehydration.
We’re told the protein element boosts available energy for endurance athletes. With antioxidant and electrolyte compounds too, there’s a mouthful of science to digest, so it’s a good thing citrus and summer fruit flavours taste good. It’s a bit on the pricey side though.
Manufacturers description
EnergySource 4:1 is an advanced fuel for use during exercise. It contains 4 parts carbohydrate to 1 part protein. Reseach shows that this ratio can provide endurance athletes with more energy than carbohydrate alone and that protein protects muscles from being broken down and used as fuel during endurance training and competition. EnergySource 4:1 contains our unique High Electrolyte Anti Cramping formula , which is designed to maximise fluid uptake and minimise the onset of cramp. An effective blend of antioxidants (natural bioflavenoids and carotenoids) help neutralise free radicals.£24.99/1.6KG Tub, £12.99/12X50G Sachets

Superb. I use the citrus flavour which is a joy to drink and seems to do the job. Seems much better than other major brands I have tried.

It's good to know that you find this product agreeable - but how? (ie; what is it that you find better than other brands you have used)?
There is evidently alot of scientific evidence to back up the manufacturer's claims of improved performance; but what is your personal experience of use of this product??

Tried a tub of this but have to say that I will be sticking to SiS PSP instead. I didn't think it tasted as palatable (personal, I know) and found it a lot more sickly using over longer periods of time (eg Merida marathon).
It seems over priced too and i'm not convinced by the inclusion of protein. The review also mentions the carb content as fructose and glucose - both simple carbs. Where's the slow release carb i.e. maltodextrin? Is this just an omission?
I would use it again - but only if I had no other option for energy/hydration.

It is better than other products because it is easy to swallow, especially when you are mid- event . I have found the gels particularly good, unlike other I have used they stave of the depleted feeling during long events 2hrs +

I found this product not good at all. I raced the Enduro 6 back in April using it and all I wanted to do all through the race was puke. I literally had mouthfuls of puke come into my mouth which I had to spit out. Not good. I felt like shite and it ruined my race. It is extremely sickly, clings to your mouth and causes immense bloating (well for me anyway!). I was also not impressed with High 5's after service after emailing about my experience with the product I heard not one thing back off them.
I now use Maximuscle Viper which is absolutely awesome. Fresh tasting and keeps me fuelled up throughout my rides. I have also used Torq Energy which is also good but not as good as Viper IMO.

Generally an effective product in my experience, but with a few caveats:
-Don't go over 5 sachets for a 3 litre hydration pack. I used 6 for my first couple of laps at a very hot 10 Under the Ben last weekend and ended up feeling a bit parched. I put this down to the electrolyte content being too high at this concentration.
-The powder doesn't disolve too readily, even with a good amount of shaking, meaning that you might be spitting out gobs of undissolved gunk for the first mile or so.
-It does leave your teeth a bit furry after prolonged use.
On the up side, I never had any problems with energy for the whole day. I find it pretty paletable with none of the harshness I find with other drinks.
It really supresses any desire for solid food (tried to eat a Mule bar at one point, but my stomach was like a walnut). Some reviews put this down to the protein content. Whether this is a good or a bad thing depends on your point of view.
What the protein definitely does do is aid your recovery. Although this can be achieved by other means, this product does allow you to eat whatever you fancy post-race.

Hmm! I prefer Powerbar Energise in the Lemon flavour - though I have to buy it online most times as a lot of places such as Cycle-Shops included, do not stock it - Superb!
