Taking carbs on board can be done in various ways, but the quickest and most palatable way is through gels.

Carboshotz, as the name suggests, are loaded with carbohydrates, as well as sodium and potassium, with vitamins C and E to aid recovery.

The gel isn’t as thick as others we’ve tried, making it easier to take, and both the cola and wild bean flavours we tried tasted great. The wild bean option also has a caffeine hit.

Although Shotz recommend the Carboshotz on an empty stomach, we still found them effective after food. But they worked especially well about two-thirds of the way through a ride, right at the point where you need a pick-me-up.
