CrankBrothers M17 multi-tool review

BikeRadar verdict
"A multi-tool classic that remains a popular choice for our pack"
Shopping partners
CrankBrothers always produce covetable multi-tools that are a joy to look at, and the M17 is a lovely piece of design with its rounded edges and knurled sections.
The tools are firm with little flex and the narrow body gets into most awkward corners. For some reason though, it seems to attract dirt at the base – and when grime gets between the tools it makes everything stiffen up, so the tool will need some regular TLC.
The chain tool, even though it is integral, is more successful than others of the same type. The single plate is deep and secure, and the small size isn’t a bother because the textured surface gives just enough grip, while the compact body isn’t too big to act as an effective handle.
A rubberised band stops the tool rattling around in your pack but it won’t stop the dirt getting in, so we’d consider upgrading to the 19 (which comes with a box) if you’re a mucky pup.

Yay they love the chain tool!
Seriously, for all I've read the CB17 seems the best multi-tool around and I was planning on giving it a go this summer. Glad to see another review that agrees.

Outstanding tool.
Got one of these for Christmas and I'm extremely impressed. All the tools you need, compact, very well built - has a feeling of real quality and robustness.
Chain tool works perfectly
Excellent. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone.

I got one when they first came out in around '05. It still works nicely, but it is getting a little stiff. The more I use it the less stiff it is. I've never needed another tool while out riding.

I've had mine for about four years and it's going strong. I love the built-in spoke key in different sizes. The rubber retaining ring is a bit fiddly but otherwise it's worth the premium price.

Nice tool but it lacks in quality. I specially liked the spoke keys, which is universe and very handy. Sadly it only lasted a couple of months (I work on my bikes allot). My old Top Peak Hexus lasted six years of (ab)use! I believe this is a lot of money fore the poor quality you get. Bottom line: There are better quality tools on the market with out a doubt just bought a new Hexus. Use a poor quality tool and it will cost you much more in the end. I don’t like to spend my time chasing new bolts.
