NAHBS 2013 highlights - massive gallery part four

Fat bikes and adventure touring rigs

We're still not done with our coverage from the North American Handmade Bicycle Show – and if you weren't lucky enough to walk the halls yourself, hopefully you haven't grown tired of looking at the amazing machines in our first, second and third image galleries.

Our fourth and final installment is a collection of this year’s fat and adventure touring bikes. There’s a lot of overlap between these two types of go-anywhere rigs. Both are relatively new genres of bicycles that have become sweethearts of custom builders. (Due in no small part the fact that, while increasingly popular, there are still just a handful of companies offering production models.)

Not quite fat, but quite popular

Surly’s massive 29x3in Knard tires and 50mm-wide Rabbit Hole rims have gained (ahem) traction with the custom crowd as well. While bikes designed to accommodate these tires may not technically be considered full-on fat bikes, they offer similar traction and rollover benefits in a more traditionally-designed frame package, as there's no need resort to 170mm-wide rear dropout spacing or 100mm bottom bracket shells.

Click through the gallery to checkout some of this year’s finest fat, fat-ish and adventure touring bikes.
