MagicShine’s new twin LED MJ-880 is an outstanding combo of compact head size, powerful, versatile beam and an absolute bargain price.
The two high-power Cree XM-L LEDs are mounted in a compact, finned and anodised Eagle Eye head unit. It also has a useful ‘visor’ on the top edge to stop you getting accidentally dazzled if you lean too far forward on a really steep climb.
Our light beam shots confirmed the on-trail impression that it matches far more expensive lights in performance terms. The beam is really well balanced, deep reaching but wide enough to put twisty singletrack in well lit context with no eye-tiring black spots or other optical flaws.
The backlit rocker switch makes toggling between the five evenly stepped power settings very easy and it changes colour to indicate remaining charge. Run times are very healthy anyway though, at three hours and 25 minutes, so you’ll need to go properly epic to wear it down.
A simple rubber ‘Y band’ mount keeps it in place and makes it helmet mount compatible. The hard case battery also has rubber straps, which are a lot less abrasive than gritty Velcro straps. The extra long lead means you can sit the battery right down near the base of the down tube where there’s generally more room.
Here it has least effect on handling, but it does mean more cable flapping about if you’re not careful. That’s a minor niggle on an otherwise very impressive light at an amazing price.
