"Ultimate travel protection for your bike"

By BikeRadar

Established in 1983, B&W have built a strong reputation as a specialist case manufacturer for a number of applications, including bicycle boxes and bags. Travelling with your bike can sometimes be a problem with baggage handlers not realising the fragility and sometimes expense of your beloved bike.

B&W's Touring bike box is manufactured from ABS plastic with thick foam padding on the inside to absorb shocks and prevent damage when in transit.

Two padded wheel bags and a foam protection block for the chainset are also provided which proved to be excellent at stopping any internal damage. On first inspection the box appears small (at just 1180mm long x 850mm high x 275mm wide), which means it fits nicely into most saloon or hatchback vehicles. Removing the handlebars, seatpost and rear derailleur, a 56cm road bike went straight in with no problems on fit.

Double straps hold the frame in place inside the box whilst wheels sit nicely on top keeping everything together. Overall design and manufacturing quality is superb, with rollers at each corner, two handles and four integrated locks. It's also nice to see that an external strap has been added from the original design to provide a bike case that really does give you the confidence to travel without the worry of damaging your bike.

Here goes. I have this box and it has been on three flights in two years. Two to the continent and one long haul to africa. It is a good box however in just those three trips it has a puncture hole on the top and is cracked in two places underneath the box near the various wheels.

I actually had the misfortune of watching a baggage handler loading the box onto an easy jet flight and to my horror he actually swung the box onto an edge of the luggage trailer before swinging it into the air to land it side on the conveyor for the plane. The good news is that my bike was not damaged at all however the box needs to be replaced and neither the airline nor my travel insurance have helped to date. Some three months after the trip.

In summary its a good box with great wheel bags that will protect the bike but its not unbreakable as my experience with french baggage handlers have shown.

I have had one of these for about 6 months and used it several times including several flights. The case has certainly protected the bike well and I have no problems whatsoever with catches etc. You do have to be a little careful lining them up when closing it as it is such a large lid. Speaking of size (which is important), it will only fit into my Corolla hatchback with the seats folded down. My only problem with it is the weight; you need to take account of this on flights. With Easyjet for example I have to pay about £20 excess baggage because of total baggage weight on top of the fee for a bike. I dont think the weight is excessive, but you do need to take this into account when flying.

Having owned both the original B&W Touring box and the latest model reviewed above I can say that the main improvements that have been made are:

    - More durable locks

    - Integrated external strap

    - Thicker foam padding

    - Foam chainset protection block

    - Padded wheel bags

The locks are now an internal design which means they are less prone to damage in transit and the external strap is a nice addition (as I used to use a suitcase strap around the original box for added security). I do still put tape over the locks, just in case one takes a particularly heavy impact, although in reality with the newer internal type of lock this isn't really required.

Foam has increased in thickness for added protection and a foam chainset block is also included. The wheel bags are now padded and include internal pockets for tools, spare inner tubes and pedals.

I found that it's important not to over load either of the boxes, to prevent additional stress on the handles when lifting or moving the box. Although the box is big enough to fit more kit in along with the bike I now put just the bike in the box to keep it as light as possible, with all other kit in my kit bag.

Having travelled with the original box for a complete season, sometimes as much as 3 times per month, I only traded the box in for a newer model as a friend was looking for one and it was time to upgrade to the latest model. Admittedly it has taken some punishment, but is still transporting bikes all over the world without damage which is the main thing. Likewise with the new one, baggage handlers certainly aren't known for their gentle touch and it's taken another full season of abuse, looking a little scarred on the outside but still keeping the contents on the inside in perfect condition.

Having used both the old and new Touring boxes for well over 70 flights and never had any of the contents damaged is justification enough for me that I can travel with confidence.

I bought the previous version of this bike box a couple of years ago following a similar glowing review in cycling weekly. I have to confess that seldom have I been so disappointed by a piece of Kit. I also wondered then as I do now whether the reviewer has taken it on a flight

To be fair to this box they seem to have changed my main gripe which was the abysmal catches which held the box closed. They were cheap, fragile and came loose even when locked. Following my first flight with this box 3 out of 4 of the latches had come loose and opened despite them all being locked. Now when I use it I have to wrap each catch and the bike box in duck tape to ensure they do not come loose.

With regard to the padding the phrase thick is not the first one that comes to mind more like just adequate it’s about 1 cm thick I should go out to the garage to measure it but its raining. I tend to supplement this with bubble wrap.

The buckles that hold the internal straps are cheap brittle plastic. I broke one the first time I tried to tighten it. After a couple of journeys another strap came away where it was attached to the box. I now tie the remaining ends together rather than using the buckles.

The wheel bags are not padded as suggested in the review (has the reviewer used the box?) but to be fair are made of very sturdy canvas like material and to be honest are the best part of the whole deal.

If you try and pick the case up by the carrying handle the whole case buckles and it feels like the handle is going to give way, to be fair this has never happened but it does not fill you with confidence. The side handle is on its last legs as the rivet that held it on has given way and it is now held together with a bolt from my toolbox

The wheels that the box runs on are very sturdy and I have had no problems with these. I found it a bit amusing that this is the only part of the box for which spare parts are supplied; they are the one part that will outlast the life of the box.

One of the selling points of this box was meant to be the ability to put it in the boot of your car. I have an A4 estate and it does not fit in the boot of that I am pretty sure it would not have fitted in the boot of my previous Golf I would be curious what cars come under the description of “most saloons and hatchbacks” in which this bike box does fit without putting the rear seat down. Please enlighten me.

The external ABS plastic of the box marks easily and quickly looks worn (does not bother me). I have used this box on 5 European journeys in the last 2 years, 10 flights in all and at present it is starting to look on its last legs wrapped in duck tape.

On the positive side my bike has never been damaged whilst in transit with this box and overall it offers adequate protection. If there has been a marked improvement in the new versions locks then most of my gripes would be dealt with. I would suggest looking at the box first before buying .I got it over the internet from wiggle.
